Architectural Journey, Finally the Final Episode!

This architectural journey I started back in March finally comes to an end with this installment. While the theme was "Architectural Travel in Japan," considering the remaining budget, it was way too much to spend on just one domestic trip lol
So, after much deliberation, the answer I came up with was Taiwan.I somehow convinced myself it was barely acceptable because there are buildings designed by Japanese architects, and since it was the last trip, I decided to go all out and head overseas for a luxurious finale lol
And then I realized... this was actually my first time traveling abroad alone lol I'd always gone with family or friends before, so surprisingly, this was my solo overseas debut.

First thing in the morning, I boarded a flight from Haneda Airport, arriving at Taiwan Songshan Airport after about 4 hours.
Upon landing at the airport, I first switched to my eSIM (Airalo), exchanged currency at a bank inside the airport, and got an IC card (EasyCard), similar to Japan's Suica.
I considered a 3-day pass, but since I'd be traveling between Taichung and Kaohsiung this time, I opted for the EasyCard, usable throughout Taiwan.
It's incredibly convenient that you can easily buy the EasyCard right away at ticket vending machines.
Plus, Songshan Airport is conveniently located, only about a 15-minute train ride from downtown Taipei.
Using my EasyCard, I boarded the MRT (subway) and headed first to Taipei Main Station.

3:15 PM

Performing arts facility

Taichung National Theater

National Taichung Theater

A stage arts facility with beautiful, smooth curves

The highlight of my first day in Taiwan was the Taichung National Theater and Concert Hall, designed by Toyo Ito, located in Taichung. It's a large performing arts facility built in the new downtown area of Taichung City, about a 50-minute ride from Taipei Station via the High-Speed Rail (similar to Japan's Shinkansen).
I had pre-booked and purchased my High-Speed Rail tickets in Japan beforehand. It was straightforward and convenient to pick them up at the ticket machine by simply entering the last four digits of my passport number and the reservation number.
The fact that everything is written in Chinese characters made it feel familiar and approachable. After arriving smoothly at Taichung Station, I took an Uber to the National Taichung Theater. Uber seems incredibly popular in Taiwan; the car arrived in just a few minutes after I called it.
From Taichung High-Speed Rail Station, it took about 15-20 minutes by Uber to arrive.
The building was far larger than I had imagined, and I was overwhelmed. The roads are wide, the surrounding buildings are huge, and everything just feels massive. The smooth, playful curves of the exterior walls and the glass panels sandwiched between them combine an indescribable cuteness with modernity.

The interior features curves on every surface, creating an intriguing space that makes you feel like you're in a cave.
The café and shop blend in beautifully, offering a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.
Climbing the stairs revealed a rooftop garden.
Greenery surrounds a white, chimney-like structure with a curved form, evoking a somewhat Laputa-like image.
I wanted to take a break at the attached cafe, but since I'd set my MRT return time early to visit Taipei's night market stalls, I took an Uber back to the station after thoroughly enjoying the place.
(Actually, the Taichung Green Museum designed by SANAA is nearby, but since it was opening the following week, I decided to skip it this time.)

Hotel Papa Whale

HOTEL PAPA WHALE

A modern hotel a 10-minute walk from Nishimon Station

After retrieving my suitcase from the locker at Taipei Station, I walked through the city toward the hotel for this trip.
I chose "Hotel Papa Whale" because I thought a slightly chic, smaller place would be nice for the occasion.
The interior design is very elaborate, and every single item placed there is cute.
It's also interesting that the buffet-style breakfast includes the option to have a solo hot pot at the neighboring restaurant.

Ningxia Night Market

NINGXIA NIGHT MARKET

Taipei's foodie mecca.
Endless rows of food stalls create a festive atmosphere.

After video calling my family about the hotel room, I almost decided to just grab a quick bite at a nearby shop and call it a night. But I couldn't do that.
Considering the rest of my schedule, today was probably my only chance to visit the night market. I steeled myself, took the MRT from Ximen Station to Zhongshan Station, and headed for Ningxia Night Market.
Still, every station around Taipei Station was packed. The crowds were so dense, it felt like every station was Shinjuku Station.
Ningxia Night Market, about a 10-minute walk from Zhongshan Station.
Stalls lined up in two rows down the middle of the street, and we squeezed through the packed crowd between them.

On both sides, the aromas of Taiwanese food and a wide variety of dishes and sweets filled the air. Everything looked delicious, but since I was already craving noodles, I decided to eat at a slightly less crowded shop serving rice noodles and squid soup. The taste was... well, okay lol
I really wanted to try other stalls too, but eating alone has its limits. So I bought milk tea at a nearby convenience store and headed back to the hotel. (This milk tea was insanely good lol)
With 7-Eleven and FamilyMart convenience stores everywhere, you're unlikely to be stuck if anything happens. (Being able to pay with an EasyCard is also super convenient)

KUO'S ASTRAL BOOKSHOP

A bookstore with a lovely retro atmosphere

After finishing my solo hot pot buffet breakfast at the hotel, I worked in my room for a while.
Once I reached a natural stopping point, I decided to explore Taipei's streets.
My destination was Kuo's Astral Bookshop (郭怡美書店), recommended by Ichya-san.
Located within Dihua Street, a historic shopping district representing Taipei's old town, Dadaocheng, it's a small, independent bookstore blending seamlessly into the old streetscape. Focusing mainly on literature, poetry, and lifestyle/art books, it was a wonderfully atmospheric bookstore.

Fukuchin Pork Rib Noodles

This is the real deal—authentic braised pork rice!

I had a reservation at Gaotie for noon, so I hurried out of the bookstore and rushed to Fuchin Pork Chop Noodles near Taipei Station, which Ichya-san had visited six times in a single week.
I'd thought December in Taiwan might be a bit cooler, but with the clear weather and my jogging pace, I was already lightly sweating in just a T-shirt.
We arrived at our destination, quickly filled out the order form, and the food came out faster than at Sukiya.
Finally, authentic Lu Rou Fan. The gentle flavors, along with the radish soup, soaked into my body.

National Theater & Concert Hall, Taipei

NATIONAL KAOHSIUNG CENTER
FOR THE ARTS

A stage arts facility with beautiful, smooth curves

I took the 12:00 high-speed rail from Taipei Station to Kaohsiung, located in the Tainan area.
What I absolutely wanted to see in Kaohsiung was the Weiwuying National Center for the Performing Arts.
The Weiwuying National Center for the Performing Arts, adjacent to Kaohsiung's Weiwuying Urban Park, is a national performing arts facility representing southern Taiwan. Designed by the Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo (Francine Hoven), its large, curved roof reminiscent of a banyan tree canopy is iconic. It features multiple halls, including a concert hall and opera house, and is known as one of the world's largest "performing arts centers under one roof."
After about two hours, I disembarked at Zuoying Station. From there, I transferred trains for another 30 minutes.
As soon as I exited the station, it appeared right before my eyes, but the building's front was completely filled with food stalls. Perhaps because it was a holiday, it felt like a festive celebration.

However, it's far too large compared to yesterday's Taichung National Theater, making it impossible to grasp the whole picture.
After walking around the perimeter for a while and stepping inside, I found another cave-like space like yesterday's. Only, it felt even more rugged and organic.Perhaps because even the ground curved smoothly, it had an intriguing quality that made you forget it was a building.
And everywhere was bustling with events. Exercise classes, live performances, and children's events were happening all over the building, while an outdoor stage hosted rehearsals by a female group that seemed to be Taiwanese artists?
The halls looked truly beautiful on the website, and I thought it must be an amazing space to experience concerts or plays here.

A Stroll Through Takao

Stay time: 4 hours.
A whirlwind visit to Tainan

The return high-speed rail departure time is 17:55. My stay in Tainan is about 4 hours.
Thinking I still had time, I was strolling around the coastal area, but having time was just a delusion.
As I leisurely strolled along the coast, relaxing, time flew by in an instant. Before I knew it, there was no time left to see the Art District. I even wanted to grab some tea at a cafe-like place, but there was absolutely no time for that.
Both the Kaohsiung Pop Music Center and the Pier-2 Art District were just glimpsed before I had to rush past them – a frustrating situation. Thinking I could manage everything in 4 hours including travel time was incredibly naive.
If I ever get another chance to come, maybe staying overnight in Tainan would be better.
With that thought in mind, I dashed back to Zuoying Station, boarded the high-speed rail, and spent an hour and a half each way returning to Taipei. Goodbye, Tainan...

Lao Shan Dong Beef Noodles

LAO SHAN DONG NOODLES MADE BY HAND

A hugely popular restaurant featured in Bib Gourmand

As a huge ramen fan, the noodle dish I absolutely wanted to try in Taiwan was beef noodle soup. (What I ate here was the "Three Treasures Beef Noodle Soup")
I was looking for a good, casual place to eat and found this "Lao Shandong Beef Noodle Soup" near Ximending Station on a blog.
Apparently it's been featured in Bib Gourmand before, and it must be popular because there was a line of about 10 people.
However, maybe because the turnover is fast, we got seated smoothly. They take orders in advance, so the food came out quickly.
The beef, from different cuts, was tender everywhere. The broth was light and flavorful, packed with umami. The wide noodles, somewhat like udon or hoto, were soft and very easy to eat.

A high-rise art residence reminiscent of Duke Sōke

After finishing breakfast at the hotel buffet, I boarded the Bannan Line just past 8 a.m. and headed for City Hall Station.
My target was Tao Zhu Yin Yuan, a condominium complex attracting attention as a new landmark alongside Taipei 101. This building was the one that made me think "What the heck is this?" when I searched "Taiwan architecture" on Google Images, ultimately deciding on my trip to Taiwan.
Since it's not really a tourist spot, the surrounding area was deserted.Stepping off the station and walking toward the building, an extraordinary structure immediately appeared.
Its twisted form evoked the style of the legendary Duke Kōya.
With its anaconda-like shape, central glass tower, and greenery peeking from balconies on each floor, it stood pulsing with life-like vitality.
The appearance changed with every angle, so I walked around it until I couldn't get enough.

SONGSHAN CULTURAL AND
CREATIVE PARK

The Most Beautiful Library in Taiwan

From City Hall Station, head one stop to the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station area and visit the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park.
Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is a cultural facility and park redeveloped from the former "Songshan Tobacco Factory" (built in 1937) in Taipei's Xinyi District.
This is also where Not Just Library, recommended by Icchasan, is located.
After purchasing tickets at the entrance ticket machine, head straight inside.
True to its origins as a renovated bathhouse, the structure is fascinating. Square sunken spaces like kotatsu tables serve as bookshelves, while white tiles hint at its past as a bathing area.
The lighting is absolutely stunning—truly the library often called Taiwan's most beautiful.
(There are many other wonderful libraries too, but visiting them all this time was impossible lol)

HUASHAN1914・CREATIVE PARK

: A Modern Renovation Space Highlighting Exposed Red Brick

Next, I took the Bannan Line to Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station, then headed to Huashan 1914 Creative Park.Huashan 1914 Creative Park is a cultural facility in central Taipei, renovated from an old distillery (founded in 1914). Utilizing the red brick warehouse complex, the grounds feature scattered art exhibitions, design events, shops, and cafes. It seems to be a beloved spot where historical architecture intersects with modern culture.
After a short walk from the station, I arrived to find it bustling with people, likely due to an event taking place. The new architecture harmonizes beautifully with the red brick and weathered concrete walls, creating a truly wonderful space.
It's a delightful place just to browse the shops, featuring works and small items by contemporary artists and creators, as well as stylish tea gifts.
Coincidentally, a Tohoku Fair from Japan was being held, adding to the lively atmosphere. It was also a perfect spot to pick up stylish souvenirs for family, so I highly recommend it.

JIUFEN

Spirited Away?
The popular tourist destination said to have inspired the setting

The final stop on this trip was Jiufen, that super popular tourist spot recommended by Naomi. There are several ways to get there, but this time I chose the Taiwan Railways (TR) × Uber combo. The plan was to take the TR from Taipei Station to Huanfang Station (about 50 minutes), then an Uber from Huanfang Station to Jiufen (about 15 minutes).
(I even consulted ChatGPT, and this is probably the most time-efficient way lol)
After about an hour and a half, we arrived in front of Jiufen Police Station.
As we started climbing the stone steps towards the famous spot, the quintessential Jiufen scene unfolded immediately – rows of red lanterns lining both sides.
And then, tons of tourists. The most popular photo spot was packed like Takeshita Street.

Since Jiufen is said to be the inspiration for the setting in Spirited Away, Ghibli-related merchandise was everywhere, and No-Face was peering at us from all corners.
Gui Shan Street was lined with takeout shops, and the smell of stinky tofu wafted through the air whether you liked it or not. It's normally a place to enjoy eating while walking around, but I wasn't particularly hungry. Still, I figured I might as well try the famous black sugar tapioca milk tea at Xing Fu Tang.

As expected of a tourist spot, the staff spoke to me in Japanese once they realized I was Japanese.
I saw a photo of a tapioca milk tea on fire and wondered if it was just some kind of image, but it turned out to be a performance where they sprinkle brown sugar powder on top of the milk tea right there and char it with a burner until it caramelizes.
And this is delicious. Not overly sweet, the caramelized brown sugar bits provided a crispy accent. I don't usually drink sweet beverages, but this was right up my alley.

With my tapioca milk tea in hand, I strolled through Jiufen Old Street for a while. As I relaxed, soothed by the view from the observation deck, dusk began to fall. I decided to head back to the photo spot to capture that scene.
As the sky darkened, the red lanterns gradually lit up. The townscape glowing towards nightfall was incredibly beautiful, and combined with the magic hour, a fantastical world unfolded.
But man, it was way too crowded lol.
After enjoying it for a while, I called an Uber back to Banpo Station and returned to Taipei Station.

: Perfectly Spiced Curry Flavor

For my final dinner in Taiwan, I'd planned to have water dumplings at "Ximen Liangshanbo Xiaolong Tangbao," a place close to my hotel. But to my surprise, there was a huge line...
With 20-30 people waiting, I decided to give up.
Instead, I ended up at a nearby, very local-feeling eatery called "Qiao Ya Mian Shi Guan".
I ordered curry fried rice and soup.
I'm not sure if it's authentic Taiwanese cuisine, but this curry fried rice was absolutely delicious.

Complete

Well, this concludes our 10-part architectural journey!
This journey began after our miraculous Grand Prix win, to test the theory that "creativity seems to be proportional to distance traveled."
Thanks to the support of our company, family, clients, and everyone who visited our travel site, we were able to see this project through.
And it was a year where Studio transformed us profoundly.
We are grateful for everything...

It's impossible to prove just how much my creativity was honed, lol.
But seeing all sorts of things, meeting people I wouldn't have met otherwise, and getting all kinds of inspiration—it was definitely a wonderful time.
I think it was a trip that probably boosted my creativity too!
So, I'd be thrilled if this travel site helps someone, somewhere, in some way.
Thanks to everyone who read to the end!
Well then, see you somewhere.
